Questions asked:
How can we control our thoughts?
Do we need to control them?
Discussion:
Who has thoughts? Where do thoughts originate from?
A new born to a person on the death-bed, any living person has thoughts. They originate from our observations, interactions, deductions, intellect and involuntary physical needs like hunger and procreation.
We are born with a cortex and develop the neo-cortex (parts of the brain). Thoughts are created here. The cortex is our sanchit or prarabdha, the samskar we are born with. Neo-cortex is our kriyaman karma, the thoughts we act upon. Cortex is disha and neo-cortex is the path taken to reach the disha. It is our purusharth that will decide on which thoughts we will act upon.
To feel the need to control our thoughts is the initiation on the path of spirituality. To question whether we need to control our thoughts is a fallacy. Thoughts need to be controlled because what and how we think creates our destiny, jaisi drushti waisi srushti.
We can control our thoughts through sadhana and meditation.
PS
We are where our mind is. Our human mind is intensely active and powerful. It can make heaven out of hell and hell out of heaven. The thoughts we harbour create our physical and emotional personality.
The great saint Shankaracharya posed the question “jagat jitam kena?”, who shall conquer this world? The wise answer he gave was “mano hi yena”, one who has conquered his mind.
